Annie Smithers’ Bistrot
French
72 Piper St, Kyneton, VIC
T

(03) 5422 2039
In opening this French-inspired bistro, chef Annie Smithers single-handedly put Kyneton on the gastronomic map. A comfortable and welcoming dining room, given a touch of class with the addition of crisp white tablecloths, is capped off by efficient and friendly service. The restaurant promotes produce both regional and organic, whether it’s Smithers’ own range of jams and condiments, or tender free-range Western Plains pork loin served on a bed of shredded cabbage flecked with crunchy bacon bits. Lovers of French food will be impressed by a simple, perfectly cooked dish of plump chicken livers with sticky veal jus, or the rich chocolate marquise served with praline and the creamiest peanut brittle ice-cream. A nifty four-page wine list balances local and international varietals beautifully. But, unlike its French counterparts’, this bistro’s espresso is excellent.
