Every neighbourhood should have a smart local like Bistro Flor. French and Italian comfort food is the order of the day, aided by a wine list that embraces Old and New World labels. The dining room takes advantage of good bones – terrazzo floor, brick walls, high ceilings – softening them with dark wood tables and chairs and mustard-coloured curtains. Service is relaxed but exact, adding to Bistro Flor’s general ease. Firm-textured, house-cured ocean trout might be teamed with fennel and brittle, salty fish crackling while zucchini flowers may be stuffed with goat’s curd and pine nuts and then fried. There is a good steak frites and a classic Provençal seafood stew that makes all the right saffron and rouille moves. Desserts, such as a banana pudding with date ice-cream, can be lacklustre but Bistro Flor delivers a solid experience that even non-locals consider crossing town for.
