Mecca Bah

There may be aspects of the Mecca Bah experience that will displease the sticklers, but there’s a lot to like about the formula. Located in one of Canberra’s most competitive restaurant districts, it’s always buzzing, largely because of its décor and approachable menu. Go for the mezze dishes: the spicy lamb and pine nut böreks and the dips, especially the yoghurt, hummus and baba ghanoush. A Turkish pizza with lamb köfte and spicy tomato sauce is the real deal, but a kebab of swordfish on a couscous salad doesn’t quite deliver on its promise. Traditionalists will like the sticky date and banana pudding, while those with a taste for something more exotic might try the halwa ice-cream. A reserve wine list ensures choice and value, and service is friendly and attentive. There are few surprises at Mecca Bah, but its warmth and efficiency have ensured its continued reliability.
