MoVida is still the high-water mark of Melbourne’s romance with all things Spanish and one of the city’s definitive gustatory destinations. It’s always buzzing and it’s not unusual to see locals rubbing elbows with out-of-towners to experience some of the country’s best tapas. Frank Camorra’s forté – excellence, rather than extemporisation – is on display from the first smoky-briny-astringent croûton of Cantabrian anchovy with tomato sorbet to the last satisfied mouthful of quince and almond tart. In between, you can plot your own course between tapas (such as lamb cutlets roasted in pork and paprika pâté) and larger raciones (Galician octopus on waxy potatoes) or place yourself in the hands of the genial staff. The latter option also works with a wine list boasting many Spanish varietals. Meanwhile, the neighbouring MoVida Next Door offers a more stripped-back, tapas-focused version of the same.
