To some – pricey kebabs. To others – a sophisticated cuisine embodying Turkey’s place at the juncture of European and Asian cultures. It’s a moot point considering Ottoman’s smart, bright and large dining space is consistently full. Whether it’s a big date or a lobbying opportunity with the nation’s powerbrokers, there are few rival venues in Canberra. Be seduced by the classics: fried zucchini flowers with goat’s cheese; salmon dolmas; or the mezze selection of house-made dips of hummus, baba ghanoush and crushed eggplant, all served with freshly baked pide. Combined with daily specials and the likes of luscious steamed lobster and verjus, the food is bound to impress. While the cheese selection, and some of the European-leaning desserts, can detract from the coherence of the experience, the extensive wine list and service invite forgiveness.
