Big, hard-edged and glam, Rock is very much in keeping with the themes of contemporary Hunter Valley restaurant architecture. And though it’s a relative newcomer, this sturdy structure has already become one of the lynchpins of the region’s culinary reputation. The eight-course dégustation (compulsory on Saturdays) allows maximum gastronautical exploration: you could find yourself served rare wagyu hanger steak with a tiny kidney pie and sauce Bordelaise, wood-roasted rack of goat with confit leg, a sharp tomato sauce and a little block of Dauphinois potatoes, or a sweet-meets-savoury truffle crème brûlée. It’s a surprise the restaurant doesn’t do more to promote regional produce and wine (although the list is a still a good read). For better or for worse, Rock is pretty much a big-city dining package, albeit one that happens to offer impressive vineyard views.
