Lovers of minimalist design and the subtleties of Japanese cuisine already have Sono’s number on speed dial. Staff are knowledgeable, the floor-to-ceiling views of the Brisbane River provide a constantly changing panorama and the elegant fit-out is as conducive to a business meeting as to an intimate tête-à-tête. Tataki – discs of salmon and tuna sashimi encircled by tempura-battered nori with a spicy onion vinaigrette – is a standout, but the wagyu sashimi, well-marbled, tissue-thin beef served with a tangy ponzu dipping sauce, runs a very close second. For something more robust, comfort can be found in a big bowl of slippery udon noodles in broth with chicken, tempura eggplant and vegetables, topped by a just-cooked egg. The reasonable choice of Australian and European wines on the list is complemented by a good range of sakes and shochus.
